"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you," declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 29:13-14)
There are many things that we desire in life, that aren't necessarily good for us. For instance, I like to eat fast food from time to time, but I know the associated health risks if I choose to indulge and eat it on a regular basis. Another example is loving someone. This action is God-honoring, good, and healthy if we choose to love our spouse, but if we love someone other than our spouse, it's wrong and considered adultery.
God wants us to focus on him, and those things that are right, just, and pure. When we focus on things other than God, such as everything our sinful hearts desire, we are in the wrong.
If your greatest desire is to grow closer with God, all of your other desires will be influenced in a positive way.

Got The Time
For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven....God has made everything beautiful for it's own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end. (Ecclesiastes 3:1,11)
One of Alicia's greatest pet peeves is being late. Unfortunately for her, she has married a slightly obsessive-compulsive husband that attempts to do as much as possible, in a very limited amount of time, which makes him late most places, and in turn, makes her late as well.
In fact, I live by the motto, "So much to do, so little time."
God's word is clear that our limited time on this earth will have an impact on our lives in heaven. God simply does not ask us to do everything, He only wants us to do everything He has asked us to do.
There are many great things that I have had to let go of and focus more on what direction God has asked me to go. The more time you spend discovering the purpose for which God created you, the more of a significant of an impact you will have on this earth during your lifetime!

Cry For Help
The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. (Romans 8:26)
For the first time in a long time, I have been almost unsure of what I need to pray to God for. I understand lifting up my petitions and requests as well as giving thanksgiving, but lately, a particular situation has made me unclear of what I should specifically ask.
The good news is that God gives us the Holy Spirit as our personal intercessor. When we don't know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit steps in and prays for us. He prays for you when you can't pray for yourself.
Another relief is that God promises we never have to worry about what to say to him.
Trust the Spirit to ask for help when you can't!

While You See A Chance
The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought. (Isaiah 58:11)
I was talking to a friend the other day about how hard it is to take chances the older we are and the more responsibility we have. He mentioned sending his resume out to some potential employers and was a little nervous about the new opportunity because it all sounded "too good to be true."
Many times, God will reveal his plan for meeting our need, and that plan includes something specific that we must do. We can be gripped with fear or scared to try something new, which prevents us from experiencing all of the many wonderful blessings that God wants us to experience.
The next time you are afraid to follow God's plan, pray diligently and ask him to remove your fear and replace it with boldness and courage.

Where Have All The Good Times Gone?
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ... (Ephesians 1:3-5)
The past few days have been very dark and difficult for me. I am facing an issue with my family that I fear is a matter of life or death and I have found myself repeating the same prayers to God over and over again. I have been asking for His guidance to deal with my family, strength for my weaknesses, and now I am trying to let go of what I cannot control and trust God to handle a very delicate situation.
I have also been looking for his blessings despite the difficulties I am facing and I know that he is with me always; sometimes it just feels like his provisions and blessings are harder for me to notice.
The passage from Ephesians promises us that he has forgiven each of our sins and we have been redeemed through Jesus' death on the cross. Furthermore, we are never alone as we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within each of us. Lastly, while all things good and bad come to pass, we can rest assured that we have eternal life to look forward to when we leave this earth.
As believers, no matter what trails and tribulations we face in this lifetime, we have every reason to express our gratitude and give thanks to our Father who remains steadfast and provides us spiritual blessings at all times!

Man on the Corner
Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. "I am willing," he said. "Be healed!" (Mark 1:41)
Elliott discovered my old Ghostbusters action figures recently and it brought to memory one of my favorite scenes from the 1984 comedy. Rick Moranis' character, Louis Telly, gets chased down by what looks to be a demonic Rottweiler named," Zool, The Gatekeeper of Gozier." Louis, desperately trying to escape his fate runs through Central Park in NYC and meets his demise outside the window of a "high society" restaurant. The patrons look up, see Louis in distress, ignore him, and quickly go back to their conversations and dinner.
Have you ever seen someone in need on the side of the road and quickly turned the other cheek in hopes that you did not make eye contact with the needy person? Sure, we have all done it at some point in our lives. I kept seeing the same man on my exit in the middle of a cold winter in Knoxville and finally opened my heart and took him to the nearest convince store to load him up with food and drink. I additionally emptied out all of the cash/change I had in the car, which wasn't much, gave him a hug and told him that God loves him. I was the one who was blessed that day, because he was so excited and grateful that he was going to enjoy a warm meal for a change.
Compassion is deeply seated in our emotions and our hearts are truly touched when we feel true caring for someone in need. Keep your heart open to let Christ's light shine on those in need; the blessing you receive in giving is far more greater than anything you could receive in return.

Sanctify Yourself
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways. (Isaiah 55:9)
One of my favorite children's books is "The Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. The story chronicles a little green caterpillar eating all sorts of food until one day it spins a cocoon and transforms into a beautiful butterfly. Our son particularly enjoys this story as the pages come alive in vibrant colors.
The transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly is much like our lives when we trust Christ as our Lord and Savior. He has the power to take something that is somewhat ugly and transforms it into a thing of majestic beauty. After our transformation, why do we often struggle with our old sinful habits and attitudes? The truth is that while we are a "new creation" in Christ, we are still bound in our fleshly bodies while on this earth.
While salvation is a one-time event, sanctification is a lifelong process that God uses to shape and mold our lives to be increasingly like Jesus until we draw our last breath. Thankfully, we don't have to face this transformation alone; we have help from the Holy Spirit that teaches us and guides every step of our lives.

Stay Strong
Encourage one another and build each other up. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
As difficult as the past few days have been for me in dealing with my mother's recent ER visit, I was amazed by the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from my family and friends. It is truly a blessing to know that no matter what you are facing, that those closest to you stand beside you trough thick and thin. I had already had a small taste during the college football season with so many other friends that are fans of other teams pulling for the Auburn Tigers, but I don't know what I would have done without the many words of encouragement.
The Apostle, Paul, also encouraged the Thessalonians to take care of each other. They needed each other's support just like we need it today. There is no way we can stay in the light and prepare to fight the battles of the day on our own; encouragement is vital.
We must be bold and support each other. When we do, we shine the light of Christ into each other's lives and that light soon dispels the darkness.

Tumbling Down
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11)
I chose today's passage of scripture, not because it's one of my favorite verses in the Bible, but because it's good to be reminded if God's plan for his people when things aren't going well at all.
The past two years have been very difficult for a number of businesses due to an economic downturn. In fact, a friend that runs a resume business in Knoxville told me that most resumes show high-dollar salaries and job titles until things changed in 2008. Companies are downsizing, or going out of business, and the same highly compensated and experienced workers are settling for entry-level positions, if they can find employment at all.
How do you think someone would react to God's promise from Jeremiah if they are struggling to make ends meet? What about someone who has built their entire life around their career only to have it crash down?
We all need to remember that God is good to his people all the time and all the time, he is good.

These Are The Days
Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
(Psalm 90:12)
I came back home yesterday to Alabama after my father called me to tell me that my mother was in the hospital. There was plenty of time for me to think and ponder life over the course of my four hour drive down from Knoxville. The reality of knowing that our days are numbered here on this earth weighed heavy on my heart.
Life is precious and from the second we take our first breath, we also get closer to the inevitable; death. Understanding that our time on earth is limited makes mecwant to make the most of this life I have been blessed with. Is our purpose here just waking up everyday, going to work and earning a living so I can retire at a decent age, etc? I believe it's much more...how close are we to our Father? Are we diligent in seeking him? Are we reading his Word to discover his truths, or is it just another chore?
If we are to make the most of or lives, we simply can not do it on our own. Jesus is waiting with open arms to be with you every step of the rest of your life. Are you willing to walk with Him?

Handle With Care
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. (2 Corinthians 4:8-10)
It always seems to happen this way, but just when I start to feel that everything in my life is headed in the wrong direction, God blesses me with his provisions. This has been a realization for me as of late because I am sticking to my vision for 2011 of seeking God and growing a deeper relationship with him.
In life, we can't win every battle, but we can never be counted out, either. The reason being that we believe in a God that is all knowing, all-powerful, and always victorious.
The next time you feel battle weary, turn it all over to your loving Father. Speak to him through prayer, and dig deep in his living Word! The light of Christ will shine through you.

We Are Family
But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1 Timothy 5:8)
One of the reasons I love my wife is that she has the wonderful tendency to keep me grounded as I often go to extremes. For instance, a few months ago I was determined to learn how to play the harmonica. I was given some gift cards for my birthday and used them to purchase a new harp and some instructional books/cds. My harmonica obsession was short lived as I abandoned playing after only a few short weeks and several failed attempts to become the next Magic Dick!
As pressures are mounting on me to perform at work with a down economy and health care legislation, Alicia has also recently reminded me of what's most important in my life-my family. For many people, myself included, the pursuit of success ends up costing more than most realize. The tragedy is that many people place a higher value on their careers, personal fulfillment, and success than they do on their families.
The above passage from Timothy is harsh, but true. Sadly, many people will give up what's truly the most important in their endless pursuits and it's often too late when they realize what they have lost...

Flawless (Go To The City)
I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. (Philippians 3:12)
I enjoyed the three-day weekend and getting to spend some quality time with my family. It really dawned on me how much my actions influence our son, Elliott. He literally is like a parrot and repeats everything we say, mimics many of our gestures and behaviors. Like any caring parent, Alicia and I both strive to be perfect parents.
The reality of striving for perfection is that we will always be struggling against our human and sin-filled nature. God understands our desire for perfection and he sent his Son, Jesus, who is perfect, holy, and blameless. It's through His death on the cross, that God exchanges our sinfulness for his perfect and righteous holiness.

Leap of Faith
If you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. (James 1:25)
I ran my first half marathon last year in Knoxville and am already planning to compete again in just a few months. Like any athletic event, the preparation beforehand required me to increase my distance on my daily runs. I had just added onto what was my longest distance in 2009 and by spring of 2010, I was able to run 13.2 at a fast pace, without stopping.
God asks that we spend the same amount of time and effort growing our faith. Faith is like a muscle; it gets stronger the more you exercise it. When we are obedient to what God asks us to do, and we experience His loving provisions and blessings, our faith grows stronger as a result.
The next time God is on the move in your life and asks you to do something, you will have more confidence to take that leap of faith!

Pride (In The Name Of Love)
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:1-5)
We are all guilty of this from time to time, but it's truly difficult to not judge other people who appear to be "different" from ourselves. Why is judgement so common in the world we live in? We have come a long way from the days of oppression in the United States, but we still have a long way to go.
Jesus tells us to examine our own motives and conduct instead of judging others. The traits that bother us in others are often times the habits we dislike the most in ourselves. Our bad habits are the ones we want to change in others. Do you ever find it easy to magnify others faults while seemingly overlooking your own? Jesus' statement of "Do not judge" is in direct conflict against the hypocritical and hurtful attitude of tearing others down to build oneself up.
What better day than Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. day to reserve some of the criticism that is so easy to dish out to others and take a look at our own faults. Jesus calls us to be discerning rather than negative; leave the final judgement to God.

Give It Away
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised. (Psalm 48:1)
In our efforts to discipline our son, Elliott, we often have to "take away" his favorite toys, cartoons, or video games to achieve the desired behavior. While this is highly effective for a three year old, what if our Father did the same with our blessings?
God is the source of ALL good things. Thankfully, He doesn't play favorites and will never take something back after He graciously gives it to us. (I guess, that means the Auburn BCS Championship will stay, sorry Bama!!) God never plays games with our blessings either.
God may delay giving us something that we have asked for because it is in our best interest, or the timing was not in accordance to His perfect will. Sometimes, He doesn't give us what we ask for because He is working on refining our faith and growing us into more mature followers of Christ.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow; everything or hearts truly desire is possible through our loving and caring Father!

Give Peace a Chance
Depart from evil and do good; seek, inquire for, and crave peace and pursue (go after) it! (Psalm 34:14)
Of all shows to pull together some thoughts on finding peace, the Showtime series, "Dexter," provided me with some inspiration recently. One of the main characters in Season 2, FBI Agent Lundy, would often take a break from all of the chaos in tracking down serial killers at 1pm every afternoon by stopping all work and enjoying a cucumber sandwich. For some strange reason, this inspired me to stop all of the chaos in my normal routine to seek God and rest in peace.
God wants us to enjoy peace on a regular basis. He instructs each of us to dwell on His Word and to live in harmony and unity with others. If God wants us to enjoy peace, why is it so difficult for us to find it? The simple answer is the enemy, who wants us to stray away from God's Word and peace, which brings strife and destruction into the forefront of our lives.
We must remember that God's power is much greater than the devil's, so take the time each day to enjoy the wonderful peace and presence of God.

The Secret of My SUCCESS
As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success. (2 Chronicles 26:5)
I cannot recall what I was reading yesterday, but read one of my favorite quotes from Albert Einstein. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting different results." How will this year be different for me? Well, I think I am on my way to understanding by looking back retrospectively at what I did not do correctly last year. For instance, how many times did I shrug off God's will for my life and follow my own, or listen to someone else? Too many times to recall, and many times, I failed miserably.
The first book of Psalms states "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked...but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night." Seeking guidance in God's law rather than in the deliberations of the "wicked" is paramount for success in this life. Knowing that God's will is good and perfect, it makes sense that we should seek Him in all that we do. When we live in accordance to His will, we are on the pathway to success.
Don't let your Bible collect dust on the shelf...open it up and explore God's Word and you will be on your way!

Bang and Blame
The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate." (Genesis 3:12)
A hard lesson to learn is accepting the blame, when things go wrong and you are ultimately at fault. It's human tendency to point the finger at someone else for your mishaps; this goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden.
When God asked Adam what he had done, Adam immediately blamed Eve for giving him the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Life. When God asked Eve, she blamed it on the serpent..
The next time you experience failure, try to determine why you failed instead of who was at fault. If you look at your failures objectively, you can often find ways to improve and turn failure into success and learn valuable lessons for the future.
To reach your potential, you must continually improve yourself and that's impossible to do if you are not willing to take responsibility for your actions.

Don't Worry, Be Happy?
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:6-7)
Wow! What an amazing week for the Auburn family! Our team won a hard fought battle against a determined Oregon on Monday night to give the Auburn Tigers their 2nd ever national championship in school history! On top of that, we had a few inches of snow here in Knoxville on Monday and Tuesday, so I was able to work from home and enjoy some much needed time with my family. Reality and worry quickly set in after my managing director shared my production results from 2010 with me on Tuesday, however.
I have said it before and will repeat it again, I am blessed in more ways than I can possibly begin to fathom. Despite all of my blessings, I still feel like I failed miserably last year on the job. Sure, I helped people and clients out and worked hard, but my production tells a different tale. I have been given a great opportunity and responsibility and I just know that God has not brought me this far to let me fall flat on my face. So why am I so worried? I don't know; I can read and hear all the encouraging Scripture that the Bible has about worry, but when it comes to actually applying it, I struggle.
We all worry about our position and status; it's human nature. Peter advises us to all remember that God's recognition of our efforts counts much more than human praise. God is able and willing to bless us according to His timing and that doesn't always happen the way we'd like it to. We have to humbly follow and obey God despite our present circumstances and in his good time, we will be lifted up-in this life, or the next.

You Make Me Feel Brand New
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-24)
So much has changed for the better in my life over the past ten years that it's almost hard to look back on my former ways of thinking and living. Yet there is still much for me to improve upon and I am constantly working on areas of my life with God's guidance that need to be changed.
People should be able to see a difference between Christians and Non-Christians by the way that we live. Too often, the lines are blurred and I can play a pretty convincing role of just fitting in with the "status-quo." We are to live as children of light, and leave behind our former lives of sin. It doesn't mean that we will always conduct our lives beyond reproach, but we are equipped with the tools we need to succeed and live the Christ-centered life.
As you look back over last year, do you see a process of change for the better in your thoughts, attitudes, and actions? Although change may be slow and not instant, you can trust God to change you.

The Game of Love
I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. (Proverbs 8:17)
Today is a special day for the Auburn family; we are playing for our first National Championship since 1957. What a journey it has been for the players and coaching staff! Despite some difficulties off the field, this Auburn football team has bonded well together and played hard the entire season. They have found ways to win and have come from behind several times against fierce opponents in the SEC. No matter the outcome in the game tonight, I am proud of this team and proud to be an Auburn Tiger. (Of course, I'd really like to see them bring the crystal trophy back from Arizona!)
Speaking of big games, we all play the fool's game if we believe that we can live our lives "our way" and reject God. The most important thing you can do in this lifetime is accept Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.

Putting The Pieces Together
You have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. (Colossians 2:10)
My son, Elliott, and I were putting together a jigsaw puzzle yesterday afternoon and we got all the way to the end and were missing the final piece. How annoying!?! While it's easily one of my pet peeves, Elliott could really care less. Our lives are very similar to putting together a puzzle sometimes. Too often, we look for completeness in the wrong places. If only we lost a little weight and were more fit, we'd be more attractive and accepted. If only we had this nice luxury car and new item for our house, we'd be one upping our friends and neighbors.
The problem with this rationale is that apart from Christ, we will never find that last piece of the puzzle that makes us complete. When we know Jesus Christ, we don't need to seek God by means that are unbiblical. Christ alone holds the answers to the true meaning of life, because He is life.
No Christian needs anything in addition to what Christ has provided to be saved. We are complete in Him!

My Brain Is Like A Sieve
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Like most men, instead of taking the time to read instructions, I like to learn on the fly and I have found that when it comes to computers, gadgets, and other devices, I end up missing out on some of the cool features and functions these machines are capable of doing. My good friend finally made the move from PC to Apple and I gladly spent a few hours helping him get up and running. I honestly knew how to answer many of his questions, but I had to take the time to research some other features that I had no clue about. After all of these years, I finally figured out how to sync my address books, calendars and email on my various home computers my iPhone/iPod(s) and my iPad.
Unfortunately, I take a similar approach when it comes to reading the Bible. I read enough to get by, but I am cheating myself out of what God's Word truly has to offer. We need to take our time and invest it more in reading our Bible daily. How much time do we spend reading other books and literature or watching television? When we learn and discover all that God wants us to know, we equip ourselves with His knowledge and wisdom so that we too can live at peak performance!

Patience
By your steadfastness and patient endurance you shall win the true life of your souls. (Luke 21:19)
It's been well over three years since my family left Woodstock, Georgia and moved to Knoxville, TN. We absolutely love it here and while we miss our friends and family back home, the one thing I do NOT miss is the Atlanta traffic. I lived approximately fifteen miles from my office in Alpharetta, but the commute took at least one hour, one way, on a good day. Most evenings on the way back home, I would sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic for well over an hour and a half. (No wonder people have road rage!) It occurred to me on my modest twenty-minute drive, how impatient I really am with Knoxville drivers. It was snowing quite a bit on Wednesday afternoon, so traffic was moving slower than normal, but man am I jaded?!
It's hard sometimes for us to not let our emotions or mind get the best of us, especially when it involves things in which we have no control over. How many times do you watch a sporting event like football and become an armchair quarterback? We have to understand that if we have done our best, God will do the rest; after all, He's in control of all things, for all time!
We must learn to control our temper when things don't go as planned. We must learn to also control our emotions and temper as well. Once we do that, we are humbling ourselves and letting go of control to God, who really is in control.

Sparkle
A merry heart does good, like medicine. (Proverbs 17:22)
At some point in your life, you have probably met, known, or worked with or for someone who took themselves way too seriously. A particular manager comes to mind when I think about it. It doesn't matter what kind of situation this person was in, it was ALL business, ALL the time. I am sure that once this person came home to his wife and children and the monkey suit was hanging in the closet, he became more vulnerable and let his guard down; but NEVER at the workplace or any work function for that matter.
I have always tried to incorporate my sense of humor into work and every aspect of my life. It's not like I am the President of the United States or anything. There are people I know that walk around in a permanent doom and gloom most of the time and they simply need to just lighten up a little. A little laughter goes a long way in helping you get back up again when you have been knocked down.
I think Jesus was onto something when He said to be like children; they often times don't have a care in the world and realize the importance of not taking themselves too seriously! Laughter breeds resilience, so turn that frown upside down!

You Gotta Serve Somebody
Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does... (Ephesians 6:7-8)
Looking back at 2010 and accessing my successes and failures professionally is often times difficult, but rewarding. As we are only three days into the new year at work, I am realizing that some of the funk I found myself in last year was only because of my poor attitude and failure to realize I was serving God even with my occupation. Sure, I work for a sales driven organization, but when you are handling people's insurance and benefits, there are unlimited ways to let the light of Christ shine during regular working hours.
Monday and Tuesday of this year has already started out different for me. I have already been blessed with three different opportunities to really be of service and help people. Was this what God was asking me to do last year and was I too stubborn to learn this valuable lesson sooner? I'd have to admit I am indeed stubborn and often times God will patiently place me in situations that refine my faith and develop my character repeatedly, even when I don't learn the first, second, or third time(s).
This year is going to be different and I know that I want to serve God more this year. Living this way is the only way and it's what we are all created to do, regardless of our occupation.

(Nothing But) Flowers
"All men are like grass, and their glory is like is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever." (1 Peter 1:24)
As Believers, there are three identifiable areas where we face the most adversity: 1.) By the world, 2.) our flesh, and 3.) Satan. Even though we have been "born again" through the living and enduring word of God, we will face adversity as long as we are living on this earth. The question is, how do we remain hopeful during times of hardship and difficulty?
Many people mistakenly believe the material and physical items we collect on this earth will provide us the security we all long for. It's only takes a matter of time for someone to pursue those things and realize that leaving God out of the equation only leads them to unfulfilled and broken dreams. We can also follow the lead of other people we know or idolize, but it's only a matter of time before we realize that we need to place our hope in the One who remains steadfast and is able to keep all of His promises.
The above verse in 1 Peter sums it up in a nutshell; the all of us are only here on earth for a fleeting moment compared to the word of God that lasts forever. We must make the time to dig deep into His word. It's not just a group of stories, but a living, breathing word that can serve as our guide to survival despite any situation we encounter in our lifetime.

Destiny
I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)
I suspect the gym will be filled this week with the usual large January crowd that has made a new year's resolution to start working out and getting in shape. Don't get me wrong, working out is vital to good health, peace, and overall well-being. Too many resolutions become the unfulfilling "saviors" that just simply can not offer what Jesus Christ freely gives all of us.
This year may bring difficulties, trials, tribulations and pain; but take heart because our God already knows everything good and bad that is going to happen to us in 2011 and beyond. God has a master plan for each one of us and it will never change. Sure, we can veer off course from time to time, but He remains the same. That plan has been in place since before you were born and will be the same when you breathe your last breath.
Your destiny is to be the person God has created you to be....

Tripping Billies
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil-this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. (Ecclesiastes 3:10-14)
The words from the classic DMB song, "Tripping Billies" always makes me recall the above passage from Ecclesiastes. Dave sings "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die" in the chorus of the song. In college, I can't say that I didn't live by those very words, but as I have aged and settled down, I can help but to yearn for more.
Sadly, many people have a skewed view of God and feel that they would be missing out if they were to surrender and believe. The fact of the matter is that God wants us to enjoy life. When we have the proper perspective, we discover that real pleasure comes enjoying whatever we have as gifts from God and not just in the material things we accumulate here on earth.

New Year's Day
He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly. (Titus 3:5-6)
Another new year, a new beginning, a fresh start. No resolutions for me in 2011, just a yearning to grow deeper in my relationship with Christ. Looking back at last year, I was stubborn many times and failed to give up the control in my life. I was blessed in too many ways to count, but I failed in certain aspects. This year will be different, starting today.
You see, God is looking for imperfect followers to come to a strong dependence on Him. He is not concerned with how you look outwardly or how many pounds you have resolved to loose at the gym this year. He is not concerned with how much you sell at work or how large your house is, etc. etc. He is simply looking for people whose lifestyles allow Him to empower and direct their actions here on this earth.
What are your goals this year? What do you want to accomplish? I don't know about you, but I know that I am going to move forward and let God reign supreme in my life in 2011.
