Hello Hurricane

Jesus said to them (the disciples): "Take courage!  It is I.  Don't be afraid."  (Matthew 14:27)

The older I am, the more I realize that it is impossible to make it through this life without trials.  Then again, when I was a child, I didn't have the same responsibilities and circumstances that I do today.  Regardless, it is actually during trials that I realize God's goodness and the provision He always delivers, even on the darkest of days.

When the disciples were on a boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee, they were petrified of the storm for good reason; many of them couldn't swim!  Yes, several of the disciples were fishermen, but in those days, they believed that evil spirits were cast into the deep waters.  Therefore, most of the fishing took place along the beach.  The above passage from Matthew provides a wonderful illustration of how God uses a storm to grow our faith.   Peter had enough faith to get out of the boat and walked across the water towards Jesus even if it were only for a few seconds.  Just as his faith wavered and he began to sink, he felt the arm of Jesus pulling him from below the waterline.

No one enjoys trials and tribulation; I certainly don't, but I often find myself reaching for God's hand now when I find myself in the middle of a storm.

Don't Give Up

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, "This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews says: " Let my people go, so that they may worship me."  (Exodus 9:1)

Have you ever had a hard time being honest with someone because you knew that it was going to be difficult?  I just recently faced a similar situation with a close friend of mine who has just taken a job that I don't feel is a good choice of a career.  My fear is that when the honeymoon is over on the new job, my friend will finally realize that this may not be what he is being called to do.  I reluctantly kept trying to avoid the subject all together during our most recent conversation, but finally mustered enough courage to gently speak my mind about the new job and shared my honest opinion.  (Of course, I could be wrong after all, but I would hope that my friendship is strong enough for someone to share their opinion with me if they felt I was making a mistake.)

Think of how difficult it must have been for Moses to have to approach Pharaoh for the fifth time demanding to let his people go.  The message in this passage is to not give up on doing what is right.  God doesn't always speak to us in grand ways; often times it is a very quiet voice that you have to listen for.  When He places the truth in your heart, trust Him enough to share with the people He has placed in your life.  Like Moses eventually learned, persistence is rewarded.

Just The Way You Are

God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him.  (1 John 4:16)

So much of our life is based on performance.  At work, it really doesn't matter how much of a likable of a guy I am if I am not able to sell employee benefits; I am expected to perform.  Many of our favorite athletes are expected to perform or they will lose their spot on the team.  A team is expected to win or a coach will lose their job.  I think you get the point I am attempting to make....

Thankfully, there is nothing that we can possibly do or achieve to earn a better status with God.  He does not love us based upon our performance.  He simply loves us because He created us.  Here's an even deeper thought: He created you knowing you would be unique and turn out exactly like you have and yet He would send His Son down to die for you just the same...all because He loves you.

God is good and it's great to be loved!!!

Dependin' On You

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you.  He will not rebuke you for asking.  (James 1:5)

Being a typical male, I refuse to listen to my wife's input when we are lost while driving in the car.  It must be a "guy thing," but men don't like to stop and ask for directions.  Chalk it up as pride or plain stubbornness, but we would rather drive around and be lost for hours rather than pull over and ask for help.

Maybe this gives us some insight as to why so many people refuse to seek God's guidance in their lives.  We all know we should probably pick up the Good Book more often, but many of us neglect to even pick up the Bible off the bookshelf in our houses.

When we realize the Bible is not just a group of stories, but a guide for our lives, we begin to understand the importance of seeking God's Word and applying it in our lives.  Don't be the stubborn person that lives life aimlessly, stop and ask for direction from God.

Eye of the Tiger

Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong.  But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.  (1 Peter 2:20)

Let me say how proud I am of my Auburn Tigers.  The past two weeks, they have faced tough and well-coached opponents in both Clemson and South Carolina.  In both games, they have started out slow, but managed to comeback and win in such a fashion that is bad for this AUburn fan's heart.

Their commitment to win and not give up is a great analogy to use for the life of a believer.  Almost every Christian will endure difficulties and persecution during this lifetime.  In many countries, Christians are tortured and often die for their faith.

When you feel like giving up, you are being short-sighted and too focused on this life and not the eternal one you are promised.  Not only is endurance through suffering necessary for the prize of eternal life, but when we endure hardships, we hold a special place in God's heart!

Communication

"I will not ask, I will not put the Lord to the test."  (Isaiah 7:12)

It never fails, every time place an order at Starbucks, I get tounge-tied, butcher my order and normally am reprimanded by the person behind the counter.  They have a way of embarrassing me by slowly repeating what I was attempting to say in front of the throng of people standing behind me in line.  "You mean a Tall Iced Vanilla Frappe Skinny?"  I guarantee that if I went to any other coffee house it wouldn't be this difficult.

When we pray to God, sometimes we feel like we have to offer some elaborate prayer.  It's just the way many of us were raised and how we heard it during church.  The good news is that God simply wants to communicate with us and have a conversation with us.

Don't worry about the words that you are lifting up to God, it's the conversation that He wants with us that really matters.

My Father's Eyes

"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish will give him a snake instead?  Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?  If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" -Jesus (Luke 11:11)

Our oldest son, Elliott, woke us up early this morning around 3am.  When I went into his room to check on him, he kept asking me to play with him.  I told him that I would be glad to play with him when it was time to wake up and ended up spending the rest of my night/morning in his room.

It wasn't until I was on my morning jog that it dawned on me why he was asking me to play with him at such an unusual time of night.  You see, last night after dinner, several of the neighbors got together outside and were throwing the football around while the kids played.  The more I thought about it, I realized that Elliott wanted me to play with him and I was having so much fun throwing the old pigskin that I didn't even realize it.  It hurt me to know that I had let Elliott down.

Even though good fathers make mistakes, we are to always treat our children well.  How much better does our Heavenly Father treat His children?  Not only does our Father treat His children well, He also gives us the most important gifts He could ever give us: the Holy Spirit, His Son's resurrection, and eternal life in heaven!

Security

Now then, listen, you wanton creature, lounging in your security and saying to yourself, "I am, and there is none besides me..."  (Isaiah 47:8)

I enjoy running in the mornings for many reasons; not only do I get a little exercise before work, but I also get to spend some time alone with God.  Many mornings when I stick around the neighborhood, I talk to many neighbors and friends on their way to work or school.  This morning I was blessed to have a great conversation with one of the several construction workers that is building a house nearby.

He mentioned to me how much he truly enjoyed what he did for a living and couldn't imagine doing anything else.  It made me think for a moment how self-centered I often am when I complain about having a bad day at the office.  What if I didn't have a job?  Or even worse, what if I was so consumed by my career that I was MIA at home and never spent time with my family?

Our society is addicted to pleasure and power and both of these can quickly pass away.  We need to look at our own life and ask how can we be more responsible with all that God has blessed us with.  Better yet, how can we use our life for God's honor rather than our own?

Contentment Blues

As servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love...(2 Corinthians 6:3-6)

All too often I let my circumstances determine my attitude. When everything is going smoothly, I feel good about myself; when it gets difficult, then my mood takes a turn for the worse.  I seem to have this ongoing internal conflict between my feelings and reliance upon God.  The apostle Paul was always content regardless of his situation.  Paul also firmly believed that his actions communicated his faith in Jesus Christ.

Contentment means accepting things the way they are and not wanting anything more or things to be different. This requires us to develop developing an "I can do anything through Christ" attitude. We must lean on God to strengthen our weaknesses so we can accept and adapt to changing circumstances.

We must be submissive to God no matter what the circumstances are and trust Him to oversee our specific situation.  When we believe that He is good and is working on His perfect plan for us, we experience true joy and contentment that only comes from our heavenly Father.

Anything Is Possible

"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."  -Jesus (Matthew 19:26)

Do you ever find yourself constantly trying to sit on the throne of God?  What I am implying is how I sometimes tend to push God away by relying on myself.  I probably do it more often than I realize.  It's what my father used call "getting too big for your britches."  I take on the attitude of an immature child and became somewhat arrogant in my very limited abilities.

Sure, I can do certain things on my own strength, but when it comes to me screwing stuff up, it normally happens when I have attempted to take the role of God.  For instance, I have a family member that is not a follower of Christ.  I originally tried to help "save" this person's lost soul and it brought the same result every single time-I appeared self-righteous and "preachy"and actually caused more harm than good in our relationship.  With God's loving discipline, I have learned to simply live my life as an example to others and not try to do what only God alone can do.  If we were capable of saving ourselves, then Christ died on the cross for nothing.

It's easy for me to rely on God when I feel that I have exhausted all other avenues and resources, but the truth of the matter is, what seems impossible for us is totally possible for Him alone.

Praise You

Though You have made me see troubles, many and bitter, You will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up. You will comfort me once again.  I will praise you for your faithfulness, O my God...  (Psalm 72: 20-22)

It's hard for me to fathom the period of my life where I wasn't in a close relationship with Jesus; I can barely recall the feelings of emptiness and loneliness I worked so hard to cover up.  It was easy for me to clown around and have fun in a social setting, but it was the moments of solitude that I realized I needed something more than anyone on this earth could possibly offer me-I needed His grace, mercy, and forgiveness (and still do!)

Something truly amazing and supernatural happened when I allowed Christ to move into my heart; His tender love slowly restored me to the person He created and intended me to be.  My prayers went from petty and selfish requests to prayers of unexplainable joy and praise.

I am still a work in progress with much to learn and work on, but His faithfulness is for ALL of us to enjoy.  His sacrifice in love is worth more than we could ever repay, so let us PRAISE Him for who He is!!!

Promises, Promises

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. (Lamentations 3:25)

The way time is quickly passing by this year, we will be putting up decorations and a tree in preparation of celebrating Christmas before we know it. This year has been one of highs, lows and the unexpected. One thing that is for certain, I am finally learning to trust God and His faithfulness because He is constant and unchanging.

Jeremiah was promised future restoration and blessing, and he knew that God would keep His promise also. Trusting in God's faithfulness day by day makes us confident in His great promises for our future. He is good and He has plans to do good in your life as well as mine.  Seek Him today and be blessed!

Misunderstanding

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.  (Proverbs 3:5)

It is hard to find people that you can really trust nowadays.  When you have an important decision to make, who do you trust?  A family member, friend, neighbor, or a co-worker?  Some people feel that they can't trust anyone, even God.  God knows what is best for us.  He is a better judge of what we want than even we are!

We must trust Him in every decision we make; even the small ones.  We should not omit careful thinking or fail to reason and we certainly should not exclude the ideas of our loved ones, but the key here is that we are not to be wise in our own eyes.

We should always approach our Father with humility and the willingness to let His truth speak into our lives.  He will make your paths straight by both guiding and protecting you.

Listen

Why do you call me,  'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? The man who hears my words is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the man who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.  The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.  (Luke 6:46-49)

I took a Dale Carnegie class several years ago and learned a valuable lesson-the best speaker is a listener.  I know sometimes I can dominate a conversation and at times feel that when I am pray, I am petitioning God for so many things that I do not take the time to listen to His voice.

God will speak with clarity to anyone who listens with an open heart. Trust me, He wants to speak to you too! I believe He desires to know us very intimately. To achieve this, we must read our Bible every day, and listen to the words the Lord impresses upon our hearts.

Out of Touch

Trusting in me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace.  In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties.  But take heart!  I have conquered the world.  (John 16:33, The Message)

I attended a function at church the other night and when praying with the group, I recall someone praying out loud for peace.  I started to think that I don't pray often enough for peace and at times, my life seems pretty chaotic.  I can always tell the difference in a day where I may have skimmed through my morning devotionals and my prayers are all over the map.

As followers of Christ, we can expect continuing tension with an unbelieving world that is "out of sync/touch" with Christ, His gospel, and His people.  On the other hand, we can expect to our relationship with Christ to produce peace and comfort because we are in sync with Him.

I don't know about you, but I sure could use some more peace in my life!  Praise His Holy name!

Worry

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.  (Philippians 4:6)

I have finally come to a point in my life where I realize that worrying does absolutely nothing to solve my problems.  Something that has served as me well is being more aware of God's presence in my life.

Just yesterday morning, I was feeling anxious about my schedule at work and began feeling overwhelmed about the various deadlines and meetings I have over the next few weeks as this is the busiest part of the year in the insurance world.  As I was on my morning jog, I couldn't help but to feel God's presence all around me.  The morning air was crisp and cool, and the sun shined brightly all around me.  All I could do was simply thank Him for the beautiful morning!  It sounds kind of corny, but it worked.

God wants us to thank Him and praise Him.  When we do, the greater calmness and peace we experience.  Give thanks to Him today for all that He has done in your life in the past and all that He is doing right now and all that He is going to do for you; He is good!!!

Learning To Fly

Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.  (Isaiah 40:31)

I finally caught the men's final at the US Open tonight and what an incredible match!!  (I promise this will be my last tennis analogy until the next tennis season gets underway!)  What amazed me was the drive that Rafael Nadal played with during the entire tournament, even when facing a tough opponent in Novac Djokovic.  Not only did Nadal win his very first US Open, but he became only the seventh player to win a career Grand Slam.  Not to mention, he is also the youngest player in history to reach this pinnacle of his career.  Nadal's tenacity to win the fight reminds me of one of the most powerful winged species on earth-the eagle.

The Bible makes several references to eagles for good reason; eagles do not fear or run from a storm, instead they allow the wind to carry them high above.  When attacked, they simply mount up higher, soaring effortlessly above their enemies.  Life can sometimes leave us feeling worn out and run down.  God doesn't want us to live that way, He wants us to fly.

When you come to know God and have a relationship with Him, you too can learn to fly and face whatever happens without becoming tired and weary.

Faith

Without faith it is impossible to please God.  (Hebrews 11:6)

Our Life Group just started a new study entitled "Five Things God Uses to Grow Your Faith" by Andy Stanley.  One of the questions asked during discussion was to name someone who has strong faith.  Being perfectly honest with myself,  I have faith, but I admit that I am not someone who always displays a "strong" faith.

A subtle way that we rebel against our faith is when we become frustrated or discouraged with God when our prayers aren't answered according to our timeline. We grow impatient because we have to wait for God's perfect timing. When we do this, we base our decisions on evidence instead of trusting God's wisdom and believing His promises.

We have to become comfortable with God and learn to TRUST Him.  When we trust Him, it enriches our relationship with Him.  Trust His word and let God be God.  Faith is believing in what we do not see, but in doing so, we will surely please Him!

What You Need

And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

Alicia and I stayed in an "all-inclusive" resort in Jamaica on our honeymoon five years ago. For some strange reason, I became ill during our honeymoon and missed several of the meals that the resort served. I remember thinking how much of shame it was that we had paid for all of the great food that we didn't get to enjoy too much.

This story reminds me of how some believers live the Christian life. God has promised to meet every need of His children and His riches are included in the price Christ paid for their salvation. Yet many people are trying to live on their own strength. They don't know that the wealth of God's love, power, and provision is theirs.

A believer's relationship with the Lord is one of complete unity. Jesus is our life and His Spirit lives through us. Therefore, everything that is available to Him is also available to us through Christ—all power, strength, and endurance, as well as whatever is required to satisfy our physical and emotional needs.

God offers believers everything required for living well. Trust Him to meet ALL of your needs.

Still The Same

Your name, O Lord, endures forever, your renown, O Lord, through all generations. (Psalm 135:13)

I will never forget where I was the morning of 9/11.  In fact, I don't know anyone who will ever forget the morning our country was attacked and the way life in America changed afterwards...attendance in churches were at an all time high, flags proudly flew from houses, work places and cars, people put aside their differences and seemed to be more kind for a brief period of time.

Nine years later, as we remember those who lost their lives during the attacks, I am afraid that things have changed again, this time for the worse....we have debates over a Muslim mosque being built near Ground Zero and some fruitcake pastor in Florida threatening to burn the Quran.

NO matter what takes place or what tragedy occurs, one thing is certain-God NEVER changes.  Another thing is certain-He will walk with you for the rest of your life.  Finally, if you will open your heart to Him, He will enable you to live life more fully than you ever have before.   Praise His Holy name!!!

Best of What's Around

The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in him... (Nahum 1:7)

I had a breakfast meeting scheduled yesterday morning for 7:45 am at the IHOP near my office.  Man, was I looking forward to having a big breakfast and catching up with a good friend of mine.  I kissed my wife and boys goodbye and jumped in the car, put the key into the ignition, turned it and nothing-the engine wouldn't start!!

I went down the street looking for a set of jumper cables and my neighbors let us borrow some.  With help from my handy wife, we topped off the battery just enough to where my car would actually start.  At this point, it was around 8:30 am, and my buddy arrived at our home to help me take care of my car.

We went to the first automotive supply store to have the battery checked and apparently, my common car needs a unique battery.  The clerk at the first store informed me that he did not have the battery I needed.  I called around and finally found another store that had the battery and after another jump start, I headed that way.  After several attempts at installing various sized batteries, the "special battery" was not in stock and had to be ordered from another location.  This added another hour to my wait.  At this point, it was close to 10:30 and I was starving and had still not had breakfast.  Additionally, I missed my 9:00 am meeting and was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to make it to work at all yesterday. Around 11:00 am, I had a new car battery and finally headed into the office!

On the way into work,  I started to county my blessings and thank God.  I want to make a point of how blessed I was that this happened to me yesterday instead of, let's say, today.  For starters, I was blessed that my wife was home and was able to help me out as she left town to go on a beach trip later that morning.  I was also blessed that my meeting was with an understanding friend instead of a meeting with a prospect or client.  Another blessing was that it was ONLY a battery that needed to be replaced and not something more like the alternator; my wife is staying home from work until November and we don't have a money tree growing in the back yard.

God is always with us, even on some random day where the unexpected creeps into your life and causes trouble.  I had a peace that everything would be just fine.  The more I thought about how things could have been much worse, the more I realized just how blessed I really was!!!

Pray

Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests...be alert. (Ephesians 6:18)

I can always tell the difference in my day when I have neglected to start my day with prayer.  Some mornings, as hard as I try, I lose my focus and my short-spanned attention locks in on all of the static and noise in my life.  No wonder it's easy to miss God's gentle voice.

We are always in the midst of Spiritual warfare and the key to success during wartime is communication.  The key to a successful marriage is communication.  The key to success in any business is, you guessed it, communication.  I really could go on and on...

If communication is so important why do we often neglect to communicate with our Creator?  Trying to do things on our own without communicating with God is almost like jumping out of an airplane with out a parachute.

We need to pray often, pray hard and pray for everything.  MC Hammer said it best-"we need to pray just to make it today!"

Teach Your Children

My son, don't despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent His rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those He loves as a father the son he delights in. (Proverbs 3:11-12)

Discipline is certainly not a popular word. I don't enjoy being disciplined any more than our three year old son does. Most of the time his temper tantrums are pretty humorous; he wants orange juice instead of milk, he wants a particular race car instead of the ones he is playing with, he doesn't want to come in for the night and would rather stay across the street with our neighbor's children, when it's time to come in for the night...

I was a pretty troublesome child and raised hell most of my life.  I always joke that I caused my father's hair to grey when I reached the 5th grade and sometimes when I ponder all that I did, it's probably true!!  I never understood my father's discipline until I became a father.  Looking back, I was disciplined out of love.

Even though I am much older, there are times that our Father lovingly disciplines me.  The word discipline means "to teach and to train."  It sounds negative because the word "discipline" is often associated with someone who is not loving.  God doesn't punish us to be cruel and because He enjoys seeing us in pain, but because He loves us and wants us to grow knowing the difference between right and wrong.  In order to be morally strong and good,  His loving discipline enables us to do just that.

Perfection

Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God. (Romans 5:1)

As a parent, I always want what's best for my children. I want them to succeed in all that they do, but when they grow a little older and began to participate in sports, I hope that I do not put pressure on them to be perfect.

I was watching Federer's match at the US Open this evening and was in awe of how many grand slam tournaments he has won-more than any other player in the modern era. I have also seen him lose some matches as well, but he is still one of the greatest players to ever play the game of tennis.

We live in such a competitive world that it is almost expected that we are perfect in all that we do. In college football, a team will not likely play in the BCS title game if they lose one of their regular season games. The past few years, we have had a handful of teams that had perfect seasons.

We cannot live with such an unrealistic expectation of ourselves. If you are living without God, the outcome is even more futile, because you certainly can not be perfect and live an error-free life on your own.

Give it up and give it to God!!!

Leave A Tender Moment Alone

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  (Romans 15:13)

Our newborn, Elijah, slept in our arms yesterday during worship services at Cokesbury which prompted many smiles and conversations with people we know.  One of the conversations I had was about how fast children grow up and how important it is to enjoy every moment before you turn around and your children are off to college.  I couldn't help but ponder, "am I too busy to enjoy the blessings that God has given me in everyday life?"  In a way, yes, my life is way too busy that I am missing out on some great things that God has blessed me with.

Later yesterday afternoon, we went to a birthday party for our good friend's daughter who was turning four.  As you can imagine, it was pretty loud with children having a blast in the backyard, riding downhill on a 100 foot long "Slip 'n Slide."

My wife and I switched children for a moment, she took our oldest son, Elliott inside for birthday cake as I held Elijah while the party moved inside, leaving just the two of us sitting on a swing in the back yard.  What a blessing it was to watch the little guy sleep as the sun shined brightly, reminding me that the true blessing was just spending a few quiet moments alone holding my son while he slept peacefully.

As you go about each day, slow down and look for God's blessings; they are all around you!

Patiently

So after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. (Hebrews 6:15)

There are countless stories in Scripture of how heroes like Abraham waited patiently.  We are in fact told, that this same Abraham waited patiently and"did not waver through unbelief." (Romans 4:20)

Being patient is definitely not one of my stronger virtues. No matter how hard I try, which is honestly not that hard at all, I struggle with being patient with God to answer my prayers in His perfect timing.

When I read Scripture, it is encouraging to know that people who waited patiently also struggled to hold on to a promise, wavered, held on for more, questioned and wavered some more, and ended up holding on in the end.   Take heart knowing that even if your faith is challenged and it goes through ups and downs that it's still faith.

We must trust that whatever promise we have been waiting on God to fulfill, the payoff is coming.  No matter the obstacles, hang on and never let go of what God has promised!

Build Me Up Buttercup

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thess. 5:1)

I love this time of the year...the weather is beginning to be cool down some, the college football season is just underway and being an avid tennis player/fan, the US Open is being played in NYC.

I was watching a great second round men's match last night between Nadal and Istomin. To put this story in prospective, Nadal is currently the number one ranked player in the world and Istomin currently holds the thirty second spot. This match was like watching a tennis version of David and Goliath.

Nadal quickly won the first set, but Istomin played some great tennis and took the second set to a tie-breaker. The crowd of twenty thousand began to rally behind Istomin during the tie breaker and all of the support was inspiring! The crowd's cheering made me think of how a little encouragement sure goes a long way.

How many times do we offer encouraging words to a friend or co-worker or build up our spouses? Look for an opportunity to lift someone's spirits today!!

Misunderstanding

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones. (Proverbs 3:5)

We have all been there before...imagine this: you are hungry and in a hurry so you run by a sandwich shop to grab a bite to eat and without fail, you end up in line behind a customer that appears to be taking their sweet time because it appears that they have never been in this particular restaurant in their life!  It gets worse, as the person in line in front of you cannot seem to grasp the concept of ordering their sandwich and having a so-called "sandwich artist" pile all of the ingredients on their sub as they move down the assembly line, so your quick stop ends up being more like a 30 minute water torture event. You are late back to work and your afternoon is thrown off because some clown doesn't understand how they do things down at the local sandwich shop!

How much are we like that poor soul trying to understand and grasp all of God's goodness?? Luckily, for our sake, He is patient with us and not the impatient customer waiting in line behind us as we try to figure things out for ourselves.  The key here is that God does NOT want us to attempt to lean on our own understanding and be wise in our own eyes, but TRUST in Him with ALL of our hearts.  Sounds simple, but for some strange reason, it's not.

The next time you are in a place in your life where you can't seem to figure things out for yourself, turn it over and place your trust in God!

The Spirit In The Sky

He heals the heartbroken...He counts the stars and assigns each a name. Our Lord is great, with limitless strength; we'll never comprehend what He knows and does. (Psalm 147:3-5 The Message)

I don't know abbot you, but I feel like I don't even understand myself sometimes; what do I want, how do I feel, what's wrong with me or what should I do about it? We forget that God's understanding has NO limit and He understands us, no matter what we are dealing with. We also forget that God is not some "little brother" that is there to answer our every request and want.

This seems to be a reoccurring theme lately, but it is the truth-God wants us to take our minds off of ourselves and shift our focus to Him. The more we attempt to learn about God and His perfect will for our lives, the more we will begin to understand ourselves.

Under Pressure

For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, And My covenant of peace will not be shaken," says the LORD who has compassion on you. (Isaiah 54:10)

My good friend and neighbor had a pretty rough day last week; an unexpected trip to the doctor's office, a big bill at the auto dealership to repair a broken AC Unit and to finish the day, the fridge was broken when he arrived home from work!!  Man, talk about bad things happening in three's.

When I have days like that, I can't help but to wonder if I am under attack and normally begin to feel inadequate about everything I am doing. It could be at home or at work and the feeling sucks!

The enemy wants us to stay distracted throughout the day because our time is precious and when we focus on our problems rather than God, he has achieved his goal for the day.

No matter what is happening in your life at the time, God's love for you is never shaken and will never be removed.  The next time things start to take a turn for the worse, take a moment for God...
