Tomorrow

 

So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.  For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.  2 Corinthians 4:18

 

Following a series of unforeseen events that transpired between work and home, I pretty much felt defeated by the time the day ended on Monday.  Simply stated, I was feeling overwhelmed.  As hard as it was, I really made a conscious effort to keep my focus on Christ as best I could.

God promises us all that the troubles looming in our lives today will not last forever.  So, our goal should be on focusing our attention away from our hurt and pain and looking towards the things that will last forever-God's never-ending love, His gift of grace and mercy, and eternity in heaven with Him.

When you fix your eyes on Him, your present troubles will be seen as only temporary because you know that they won't last for long.

We can live our lives with confidence today because we have a greater hope in God's promises for our lives tomorrow.  

Surprise Valley

 

My goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.  Colossians 2:2-3

My wife is still dealing with some injuries she sustained a few years ago while running the Knoxville Covenant Marathon and I know how difficult it is, as a runner, when you are simply unable to.   Several years ago, I was suffering from Iliotibial Band Syndrome or ITBS.  To heal the pain of ITBS, a common runner's injury, I recall having to incorporate cycling and swimming at my local gym in order to get some sort of cardiovascular exercise to supplement my workout for the days that I couldn't run.

One morning during all of my rehab process, all lanes of the pool were being used and the stationary bikes I normally ride were taken at my local gym.  This was a minor inconvenience for me as I was up even earlier than normal to drive out of my way to make it to the gym to work out and get back home so that my wife could head out for work that morning.  Needless to say, I did not like having to change my normal routine, which got my day off to a bad start.  My bad attitude quickly changed as I was heading home that morning and witnessed one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen.

The sun was big and filled the Knoxville skyline and made me thankful that I had to change my routine that morning as I would have probably not seen it otherwise.  

We must learn to approach each day with the desire to seek God.  He is good and faithful and blesses us in ways that we will miss if we are not diligent in searching for Him.

When you seek Him, you will find Him and all of His deep treasures all along the way-it may be the sunshine, an unexpected call from a friend, some flowers or an answered prayer.  Whatever it may be, God is always present in this broken world.

It's a blessing that my organization has allowed us to be safe and work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic for over a year now.  With that said, it has also been a challenge to work from home during the pandemic as we have a slow internet connection at the house and on top of that, my company just underwent an internal systems upgrade/conversion.  I sometimes have the tendency to come unraveled when faced with too much pressure and stress. Last week was one of those times, for sure. (There is nothing like disappearing from a Zoom call with a client!)  Following a series of unforeseen events that transpired at work and I pretty much felt defeated by the time the day ended on Monday.  I was simply overwhelmed.  As hard as it was, I really made a conscious effort to keep my focus on Christ as best I could.

God promises us all that the troubles looming in our lives today will not last forever.  So, our goal should be on focusing our attention away from our hurt and pain and looking towards the things that will last forever-God's never-ending love, His gift of grace and mercy, and eternity in heaven with Him.

Solid

Those who fear the Lord are secure; He will be a refuge for their children. Proverbs 14:26

Our youngest son, Elijah, had his wellness visit at the doctor's office recently.  He has actually been pretty healthy this year, but it was not too long ago that he was in and out of the daycare due to sickness which caused us to take time off many days from work in order to stay home with him.  Looking back, it was and still is pretty stressful for the both of us to miss work and balance time at home with sick children.  We are all promised difficulties during the course of our journey and the above passage from Proverbs is one to remember during those difficult times…

You see, when you strengthen your faith with the truths of God's Word every new morning, you build a solid foundation that will not easily crack under pressure.

When the troubles of life come your way, the attacks may come close to knocking you down, but a strong foundation will keep you on your feet because God's truths are eternal.

Stand firm and solid like a rock on a foundation that comes from trusting and fearing God!

Steady, As She Goes

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that  far outweighs them all.  2 Corinthians 4:17

I have always been fascinated by the disciple Paul after his conversion on the road to Damascus.  He never wavered on his commitment to sharing the Good News of the gospel despite some difficult circumstances he faced like being beaten and imprisoned for his faith.  We would be wise to learn from Paul’s behavior as he always seemed to understand that his trails and suffering were only temporary.  He was always able to press on, knowing that one day he would be able to obtain God’s rest and rewards.

As we face our own personal troubles, it’s easy for us to lose our focus and zero in on our pain rather than the ultimate goal.  Just as athletes are somehow able to perform and focus on the finish line rather than their discomfort, we too must focus on the rewards that await for us in heaven for our faith and the joy that will last eternally.

No matter what happens to us in this lifetime, we have the assurance of eternal life, where there will be no more suffering, sorrow or pain.  Thanks be to God!

I have the uncanny knack of coming unraveled when I face too much pressure and stress.  I was in such a great mood to start the my day on Tuesday, but by 5pm and following a series of crazy events at work, I pretty much felt defeated by the time the day ended.

God promises us all that the troubles looming in our lives today will not last forever.  So our goal should be on focusing our attention away from our hurt and pain and looking towards the things that will last forever-God's never-ending love, His gift of grace and mercy, and eternity in heaven with Him.
